The most common type of friction encountered is sliding friction. When the external force pushing an object is not great enough to cause motion, the resistance is called static sliding friction. Once the objects are in motion with respect to each other, the resistance is called kinetic or dynamic sliding friction.

Sliding friction is most commonly found on machine guides such as between the following:

  • Lathe carriage
  • Lathe compound slide
  • Late cross slide
  • Late tailstock
  • Milling machine knee
  • Milling machine table
  • Milling machine table cross feed
Commonly used materials for sliding contact bearings are :
  • Babbitt (white metals)
  • Bronze.
  • Aluminium alloys.
  • Copper-lead alloy.
  • Cast iron.
  • Sintered metal or porous metal.
  • Non-metallic materials.
