Safety when working on brakes
 
Environmental Safety
  • Ensure that work area is clean and free of any obstruction
  • Ensure that floor is dry and non slippery
  • Ensure there is sufficient light to clearly see
  • Ensure sufficient ventilation - fresh air
Personal Protective Equipment
  • Full SABS approved overalls
  • Safety glasses
  • Safety boots
  • In plant environment hardhat
  • Any other PPE as required by employer

Safety working on brakes
  • Do not do any maintenance on brakes unless you are authorized
  • Do not do any maintenance with out proper lockout (mechanical and electrical) - Videos
  • Support vehicle with jack supports and not just jack
  • Replace all guards after maintenance on brakes
  • Keep hands away fro moving parts
  • Use correct tools
  • Ensure to de pressurise system before working on brakes
Good housekeeping

It is important that good housekeeping is applied when working with couplings.  After maintenance is done the following should be observed: 

  • Clean area of all maintenance material such as rags, packaging
  • Cover fasteners with copper grease to prevent corrosion
  • Tools must be cleaned and returned to toolbox
  • Special tools should be returned to stores
  • Dispose of worn and broken brake parts to company regulation to prevent pollution
  • Worn brake parts can be recycled
