A roller chain is made up of a series of alternating pin links and roller links, held together by side links. The components of a roller chain include: inner plate (roller link plate), outer plate (pin link plate), bushings, pins, and rollers.
The pin link consists of two pins assembled into two pin link plates with controlled press fits to prevent the pins from rotating in the pin link plates. The rollers are placed equidistantly between chain links and engage with the sprocket teeth to transfer power through the chain. Roller chains are usually made up of a number of inner and outer links in an endless formation. Although offset links can be used when there is an odd number of links in the roller chain, it is better to use a design that requires an even number of links.
