Working safe with keys and fasteners

Most look at a keys and fasteners as harmless. The reality is, each year, workers sustain serious or deadly accidents while installing keys and fasteners. The following safety rules must be observed when installing keys and fasteners

Environmental Safety

  • Ensure that work area is clean and free of any obstruction
  • Ensure that floor is dry and non slippery
  • Ensure there is sufficient light to clearly see
  • No florescent lights as these lights may cause stroboscopic effect on rotating machines
  • Ensure sufficient ventilation - fresh air
Personal Protective Equipment
  • Full SABS approved overalls with short sleeves (No loose clothing)
  • Safety glasses with side shields
  • Safety boots with steel cap
  • In noisy workshop use ear protection such as ear plugs
  • When working with materials such as cast iron that give of dust wear dust mask
  • Long hair should be tied up and placed under a cap or hair net
  • No jewellery such as rings, watches, bracelets or neckties may be worn

 

Safety working with keys and fasteners
  • Key are an integral part of revolving machinery, thus do a lockout procedure when working on them.
  • Select correct tools for the job
  • Demark work area to ensure
  • Use tools, equipment and machinery properly
  • Report any unsafe conditions.
  • Keep your workplace clear from clutter.
  • Practice good posture when lifting heavy equipment.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Never take shortcuts

 

Apply good housekeeping
  • Clean area after work has been completed
  • Clean drilling machine
  • Oil all surface are with thin layer
  • Store all tools used on proper place
  • Return measuring tools to cases and return to store
