Milling machine operations |
Video Additional document |
The milling machine removes metal with a revolving cutting
tool called a milling cutter. With various attachments,
milling machines can be used for boring, slotting, circular
milling dividing, and drilling. This machine can also be
used for cutting keyways, racks and gears and for fluting
taps and reamers. To achieve the various milling operations, specific milling cutters must be used. In some cases more than one cutter can be fitted at a time (gang milling) to produce components. Cutting tools can either be HHS (high speed steel) or insert bit cutters (tungsten carbide). Cutters can be shank type cutters that fit directly into the spindle via a taper collet or horizontal cutters that fit onto the arbour and then into the spindle. |
